10  Max Payne 3 is a marvelous achievement in cinematic action gameplay and a worthy successor to the antihero’s legacy. The gritty, bitter story is appropriately dark and Rockstar’s gamble in throwing Payne into sun-drenched Brazil paid off with its tale of greed and revenge. Flawless presentation and magnificent, brutal action make for one hell of a ride. It shouldn’t exist, but I’m really, really glad that it does.

10/10 Max Payne 3 is a game that comes along only once in a while, a game that is so much better than the sum of it’s parts that it’s easy to look past any minor flaws it may have. It perfectly marries the old school challenge of gaming and a no nonsense approach to gameplay and the new school graphics and technology to create one amazing package that cannot be missed.

When it comes right down to it, the linearity of Max Payne 3 turned out to be one of its greatest assets. By narrowing the game’s scale, Rockstar was able to hone in on what’s most important and deliver in every category. The game plays great; it looks amazing, even truly incredible at points; and the story is quintessential Rockstar, which is nothing but a good thing.

Max Payne 3. It’s the game, the game with the excellent review score. But dare you read more?

-There is a reason titles from Rockstar always finish near the top of "game of the year" lists. The stories are fascinating, the gameplay mechanics are tight and developers give great attention to detail. Max Payne 3 is no different.

-In the end, though, they produced a focused, coherent and excellent entertainment experience. The shooting and combat mechanics are very good, but, as in all Rockstar games, the real touchstones are dialogue and visual design and the verisimilitude they provide.

- this unrelentingly grim thrill boasts great storytelling, sharply implemented mechanics and inventive multiplayer. It's the total package.

- Rating: 10    It maintains the mechanics that made the prior games great while modernizing them to excellent effect. Between the arcade mode and multiplayer, there's enough substantive content to keep you hooked for some time.

- The key to the game is the pitch perfect control system. A customisable auto-targetting system lets players select between hard or soft auto systems, the latter subtly guiding your reticule rather than aggressively yanking it toward specific enemies. Both are smart, seamless and intuitive, allowing newcomers to acclimatise to the turbo-charged pace.

- A technological tour de force that will have you screaming "Dear lord!" more times than midnight mass. The performances are top notch, the action plays out with unrivaled fluidity, and the multiplayer is deep and rewarding. Silly distractions aside, Max Payne 3 is an action lover's wet dream that also happens to employ some of the slickest direction and transitional trickery this side of a David Fincher box set.

- A terrific compromise that brings action and story together in a fabulous work of craftmanship and sky-high production values. So it may not have the scope of Rockstar's most famous oeuvre, but it more than makes up for that in focus, detail and raw thrills.

- A true cinematic gaming masterpiece, Max Payne 3 is not just another triumph for Rockstar, but it's also testament to what the developer can do when it turns its hand to linear storytelling. Max Payne 3 might be a stylistic shift for the series, but it's also a raw and brutal portrait of a man pushed to the edge that deserves a place alongside Rockstar's superlative open-world efforts.

But thankfully, Max Payne 3 isn’t content to simply relive the past, and makes bold stylistic and narrative decisions to avoid stagnation. And though these choices have significant consequences on the game’s pacing that may prove divisive, Max Payne 3 is overall a brilliant, darkly-engrossing third outing for one of video game’s most troubled characters.
